Aims and core activities of GEPnet
The objective of the start-up phase was to create an European-wide network of suppliers and users of good environmental practices in industry by using intermediaries as neural nodes, and by that means contribute to the project’s overall objective that is to increase the dissemination and application of process and product oriented environmentally sound practices within the European and other industries.
The network structure is characterised by the idea of giving and taking. This principle exceeds a passive access to large information sources. GEPnet intends to strengthen creativity and innovation spirit of intermediaries and suppliers via promoting the aspect of communication and interaction between single members and especially by connecting existing working groups and networks that are sometimes specialised in certain technical aspects and/or regions throughout Europe. In particular the maintenance of regional focal points represents an important element in the network’s intention to support simultaneously existing regional approaches and to foster international exchange in the field of environmental good practices.
These objectives will be reached by a symbiosis of an interconnected and flexible knowledge and information system linked to a marketing and communication platform.
GEPnet will be run mainly on the World Wide Web (www.gepnet.com) and consist of exchange platforms, existing and new databases and other information sources, which will function using several search modes. It will be an open system, so that it may evolve in accordance with the needs of the users. During the start-up phase, the project is starting to build up the network (mission, objectives, activities and members), define the working programme and execute the first activities of the network. These activities will have to prove the viability and added value of the network for its members, and to increase the number of participants in the network. The network will be self-sustaining and independent after this period. GEPnet will be the most important network in this area in Europe, with a co-ordination and management function, a high-quality working programme in place, and with a mid- to long- term funding commitment established.
