Effects of a cooling and humidification system in the feeding area of a dairy cattle shed on animal parameters (performance, health) as well as ethological and technical issues

Abstract (englisch)

Meeting the challenges of climate change and the increased number of hot days, a new system for cooling dairy cattle houses is examined in order to minimise the heat stress of animals.
Around the feeding table axial fans are installed in connection to water-bearing nozzles (system “cow-cooling”), which get activated by the animals through a light barrier, as soon as the animals move their heads through the feed fence or begin to eat.
This method is innovative because of the spraying with big water drops and a subsequent cooling by axial fans. The aim is to achieve a lowering of body temperature through the moistening of the animals´ coat and, hence, to increase animal welfare.
This system should bring a performance enhancement, on the one hand, and on the other hand should increase feed intake and cause other positive effects in terms of animal health.

The project is going to be carried out on a dairy cattle farm in 8983 Bad Mitterndorf (Fam. Neuper, VMS-Stall, ca. 60 cows, the cow-cooling-plant is positioned just behind the feed fence with 3 sectors, installation is planned for February 2020).

The following parameters are to be assessed:
- Continuous recording of temperature and relative humidity
- Investigation of energy and water consumption
- Randomised monitoring of corrosive gases and greenhouse gases ammonia and carbon dioxide
- Registration of all parameters concerning performance and health through already existing sensors in the animal
- Control by veterinary and farmer
- Ethological observation and evaluation of sensor data (GPS) through students about to take their diploma
- Economic assessment via effectivity and costs of the system

The results are practice-related for Austrian livestock farming, veterinary medicine and consulting and are going to be published in national and international professional journals as well as through presentations at relevant events. Moreover, the results find usage for the preparation of recommendations in terms of a future implementation of the system cow-cooling in animal housings (examination of facilities in animal housings in accordance with § 18 animal protection law).

Projektziele
